What is a Christian?

Are you sure you are a Christian? The world is looking at you for guidance are you sure you are qualified to lead? I feel that we have to start to ask ourselves these questions because the people that are lost and looking for guidance are confused by us so called Christians not being Christ like. You are not a Christian because you go to church or because you always telling others what they are doing wrong. Reading your bible or going to bible study doesn’t make you a Christian. Telling the entire world you are a Christian doesn’t make it so either. I googled the definition of a Christian and I found something that I thought summed it up. This is the definition of a Christian as an adjective manifesting the qualities or spirit of Jesus, especially in showing concern for others. Now with the definition alone half of you wannabe Christians are eliminated. I’m not saying this to judge but to informed because when I started to research for this article I realized that I fell short in many ways also.

I want to take this opportunity to tell you what the bible says about being a Christian first you have to believe in God.

Romans 10:8-13 (KJV)

says 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Second you have to be born again.

John 3:3-7 (KJV)

says 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, how can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. Water and spirit means to be baptized.

Third you must repent of your sins.

2 Timothy 2:18 (KJV)

says 19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Fourth good works. Faith alone is not enough you are going to have to put in work.

Romans 12:6-9 (KJV)

says 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; 8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness 9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

James 2:14-26 (KJV)

says 14 what doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things, which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Fifth you must obtain the fruit of the spirit, now this where its gets hard for most of us. We can do one through four but when it comes to being virtuous we fall short. With everything else you can pretend and fake it but virtue has to be real. When you have virtue people can sense the God in you.

Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

says 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (KJV)

says 1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity; I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

I see so many people condemning Christians on social media or in the news for our behavior. We act so hateful towards people that we feel are living in sin. I’m here to tell you that you are not perfect either we all have sinned and fell short of his glory. God does not need your help deciding who goes to hell or not. I promise you if just show people the way to God and keep your opinions to yourselves he will change them. The bible says let him without sin cast the first stone. It also says judge not lest ye be judged. We are supposed to represent love, understanding and forgiveness. That’s what Jesus represented and I don’t recall one time in the Bible that he condemned anyone he said I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. As Christians we don’t condone, neither do we condemn. I know the world isn’t right, I know that wrong is being accepted and tolerated but its not up to us to judge. We were called by God to love for the bible says love covers the multitude of sins.

Acts 2:37-39

37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said to Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brothers, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said to them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.
