Chapter 9: Secrets and Lies
9.2 The Social Club: Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous
“I’m here aren’t I? Angelo said angrily as he glared at his uncle.
Geno nodded his head, “Okay.” “But I would watch that attitude son I have killed men for less.” He said as he walked away leaving Angelo bruiting against the wall.
Angelo watched from the back of the room as a woman got on stage, grabbed the mike and began to speak over the PA system. The woman notified everyone that the cocktail hour was over and ordered them all into the dining room for dinner. “Good this thing almost over.” Angelo mumbled as he followed everyone into the next room.
There were several lavishly decorated tables with name places all over the room. Angelo slowly maneuvered his way through the crowd of people to the seat with his name on it. His chair was right in between his cousin Alejandro and his Uncle Carmine. “Angelo where you been?’ his uncle Carmine asked as he sat down.
“Around.” Angelo said.
“There are a lot of cute girls here I hope you got some numbers.” Carmine laughed as he nudged Angelo in the ribs.
“Nah I didn’t even notice.” Angelo said as he looked over at Camilla who quickly looked away.
When everyone had a taken a seat waiters and waitresses filed out from the kitchen carrying bottles wine. Each waiter and waitress poured guests a glass of wine then made their way back to the kitchen. Then almost immediately returned with appetizers. Camilla was amazed; the dinner was flowing like a well-oiled machine. “Wow this looks delicious.” Camilla said as the waiter sat the plate of food in front of her.
After every guest had an appetizer in front of them a woman got on stage and introduced herself. “Good evening everyone its me again.” The woman laughed. “I’m Veronica Foster my husband Charles Foster is the president of the Union Social Club and I will be your emcee tonight.” She said. We are very honored to be celebrating with you all the initiation of our new inductees tonight.” She said with a smile. “And now I want to introduce Chef Bonnay the very talent chef in charge of your meals tonight.” She said as she handed the chef the mike and sat down.
“Good evening everyone what you have in front of you is a Pan-Seared Foie Gras with Figs and Port Wine Sauce paired with a red wine please enjoy.” Chef Bonnay said then he put down the mike and returned back to the kitchen.
Camilla unfolded her napkin and placed it in her lap. She picked up her fork and dug into the beautiful prepared foie gras. The she took a dainty forkful and put in in her mouth. Camilla savored her first bite like it was her last it was the best thing she had ever tasted in her life. “Is it good?” Alejandro smiled as he watched her eat.
“Its amazing.” Camilla said. “You know I always use to watch cooking shows and dream about eating all the things I knew I would never taste.” She said. “My mother and father gave up so much to be together they relinquished money, power and even family.” She told him. “We weren’t rich, we weren’t poor but we were happy.” Camilla said with a sad smile. “I’m wrong for liking this version of life better?” she asked.
“No.” Alejandro laughed as he shook his head.
